warm and good, quentinhas e boas…

On these days, these nights, anyone who crosses a square, avenue or roundabout, who simply rides the pedal at the sidewalk, is engaged and transported by the delicious and persistent smell of chestnuts cracking on the coals. It is an aroma that each Portuguese carries since his/her childhood. In this time of the year, dry leaves scattered on the ground and warm woolen sweaters dominate our memories. An heady smell is released by the smoky trailer and invade our nostrils. Irresistible and gray chestnuts pass from the blackened hands of the chestnut seller to ours, wrapped in a yellow paper cartridge. So be it, hot and tasty chestnuts that give us warmth and fragrance to our memories. We just lack a cup of the traditional jeropiga (a kind of sweet wine) or água-pé (“water-feet”, which is also wine but mixed with water at the brewing!)
